πŸͺ„A hard (but exciting) pivot


Hey Reader,

Something shifted when I left my job to become a solopreneur in October 2023.

But it took until this week to finally have the courage to articulate it.

Maybe it's because I got a super rude email that, while shitty, did end with a valid question: "I thought this was a grammar learning platform where did that go?"

(I mean, this was never a grammar learning platform per se, but I did used to share more copy editing tips.)

Either way, I've realized I need to say the quiet part out loud. So here goes...

This year, I've had to ask myself some hard questions:

  • Who do I really want to help?
  • What outcomes do I truly care about?
  • What problems can I solve that will have the biggest impact (on other people's businesses and my own)?

(Nothing like going solo to force you into some deep introspection, since the answers literally = how and how much money you make πŸ˜…)

Here's what I realized and why it's so hard to admit:

While I love helping writers improve their craft (because I started as a freelance writer myself in 2018), I've realized that's not where I can make the biggest impact. And it's also not where I want to focus my energy.

Don't get me wrong β€” helping my fellow writers improve at their job is fantastic. It might lead to a promotion or the ability to charge more for your work. Those wins matter a lot.

But I'm not engrained in the B2B content writing world anymore. I don't work with writers in the same way. And, honestly, I don't miss it. Which feels hard but also amazing to say.

This year, I've focused on helping solopreneurs and founders market their expertise in a way that grows their businesses. Because when they get it right, it lets them build the life they want to live, which is huge.

I know this from personal experience, and I'm the kind of person who likes to lean into my personal experiences to help others. I've done this work on myself, and I wake up and keep doing it every day.

So yeah, moving forward, it's not about better sentences, sections, or drafts anymore.

It's about better strategy. Better positioning. Better resonance. Better results.

(Better sentences definitely help πŸ˜‰, but they don't mean much without all the other bits.)

So, I want you to know that this newsletter is evolving with me.

We'll still talk about writing and editing, but through a more strategic lens.

Less about grammar, more about growth. Less about great writing, more about great content engines designed to grow your biz.

Because here's what I've learned after helping dozens of solos via Content Sparring and now in Full Stack Solopreneur:

The best writing in the world won't help if your offer is fuzzy and your positioning doesn't land.

I mean literally two weeks ago, Nick and I had a well-written sales page that didn't land right. We refined it and boom, wayyy more sales calls and sales. That's the perfect example of how great writing means very little if the rest isn't in place.

This journey of figuring out who you really want to help, what problem you really solve, and how to package that into an offer and content people feel speaks directly to them...

That's what I'm most passionate about now.

So if you're feeling that same itch β€” that sense that you could be having a bigger impact, reaching more people, solving bigger impact problems β€” maybe it's time for your own evolution.

And to anyone on this list who doesn't fit into what I just described, I hope you stay, because I'll still be sharing writing and editing tips, just from a different lens.

But I also understand if you want to go. You can't be everything to everyone, and I'm not trying to be.

PPPS. Since I'm taking the next week off of sending emails, I want to quickly answer a few FAQs that have come up on calls, in case this helps you make a faster decision about joining FSS:

Q: How much access will I actually get to you and Nick?

A: A lot. When you join, you get to book a 1:1 30-minute call with us. We also have several practice tasks for you to complete as you go through the program, and we respond with personal feedback to each one. You can also ask random questions in the community and we also respond to all of those. Plus, you'll get our sync attention in the 2x monthly group coaching calls.

Q: Should I start with 1:1 help or join the program first?

A: In the program, we help you refine your offer, create content to drive people to it, and sell better. If you feel like you've got 2/3 of those locked in and you absolutely do not need additional help with more than one thing, book us 1:1. If you need help in one or more of those areas, join the program.

Q: What happens if I can't start the program right away?

A: No worries, go through it at your own pace. We encourage you to join the group calls and go through the program sooner rather than later, but there's no penalty for taking your time.

Q: What other types of people are in the community? What stage of solopreneurship are they at?

A: We've got people who are still in their full-time roles who want to quit and start their own thing soon. We've got people who got laid off and need to make money yesterday. We've got people who are doing well but relying entirely on referral income and know that well will dry up at some point.

TLDR: It ranges, and you'll likely have people ahead of you and behind you, and everyone will learn from each other.

Q: Are you going to make me try to write salesy LinkedIn templated copy that doesn't feel authentic because it "works"?

A: Ew, no. We'll help you find your writing vibe and will never push you to do anything you don't wanna do. We don't subscribe to "one thing works for everyone." We help you find the things that work for you.
